My Approach

First and foremost, my approach is to help students enjoy the process of learning. By working one-on-one with a student, I can understand fairly quickly what is needed for them to achieve success.

What I am able to do effectively is present and teach concepts in different ways. Typically a teacher has one way to present material - understandable with some 30 students in a class. Tutoring allows for an instructor to teach a concept one way, and if that isn’t working - to try another way. And another... until the concept is entrenched.

We do not all learn in the same way. And for any given subject, students may not be learning in the most effective way for them.  What is imperative for students is to figure out their mode of learning, be it visual, auditory, kinetic-tactile, or most typically, a combination of all. I work with students to help them figure out their modes of learning. We all absorb information much better when it is presented in ways that engage multiple senses rather than relying on a preferred modality. Helping students figure this out is something that can not be done in the classroom, but with one-on-one instruction can become an awakening with long-reaching effects on learning.

I also help students set themselves up for success - which means teaching organization and time management skills and having students assume responsibility for their own outcomes.
